I grew up in Chico, attended local schools, and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1980. I worked in construction and roofing in Butte County and the Bay Area for several years until I moved to Los Angeles to attend college. I earned a Bachelor’s degree at California State University Los Angeles, a Master’s degree at Chico State University, then returned to Los Angeles to pursue my Juris Doctorate at Southwestern Law School. I graduated from Law School and passed the California Bar in the Fall of 1997, then a year later began working as a trial attorney with the Los Angeles County Public Defender.
During my six and a half years as a Deputy Public Defender, I conducted close to one hundred jury trials, court trials, and juvenile adjudications. As an attorney I have successfully defended clients with charges ranging from simple assault and battery to sex crimes and murder. I am currently an associate attorney with the Law Office of Joe VanDervoort, an attorney who specializes in driving under the influence (DUI) defense and DMV hearings in Chico, California,. My law practice is limited solely to criminal defense; I don't sue people, handle divorces or dog bites. I work well with most District Attorneys and Judges while striving to protect my client's legal Rights. My goal is always to try to resolve cases favorably before jury trial whenever possible. Many District Attorneys, however, and the law enforcement agencies that work for them, use their vast resources to aggressively prosecute you if you are even suspected of a crime. They often do not investigate leads or bother to collect evidence that could show your innocence; they are not there to protect your rights and they don't care if your side of the case is heard. You need an aggressive defense attorney to represent you in Court when the State is prosecuting you, and that attorney has to be ready to defend your case in a jury trial when necessary. Many people look in the phone book to find an attorney, or they receive mailers from law firms and lawyers who claim to practice criminal defense in the jurisdiction where they were arrested. Often the law firms that advertise are merely attorney referral systems that do not actually practice law in the county where you were arrested; they make a living referring cases to other lawyers on a percentage or flat fee basis. Do not take advice from these law firms and lawyer referral services, do not take advice from their secretaries or paralegals. Make sure that the lawyer you are consulting will personally represent you throughout all stages of your case. I handle all of my cases personally from the initial interview through jury trial. Don't settle for anything less. I will represent clients charged with any crime - I don't judge you by what you are accused of doing. I don't work with the cops or the District Attorney to "get bad guys off the street," and I will never trade the rights of one client to get a good deal for another.
