Hiring the right Attorney to handle your legal matter is one of the most important decisions you will make. Whether you are facing Criminal Charges, Bankruptcy, Divorce, or have a Personal Injury claim, any Lawyer your are considering hiring should meet with you in person for a free consultation to discuss your situation and the likely options you will face as your case proceeds.
He or She should clearly explain what the fee will be to retain their services; provide estimates of any other potential fees and costs they foresee in your case, including for trial; and clearly explain what services they provide. The last thing you need is a Lawyer who takes your money and handles only part of your case (and then drops you) when you thought they would be your lawyer for the entire case.
They should personally handle your case - many lawyers and law firms put a beginning Associate Attorney in charge of your case; you will probably never meet again with the Attorney you thought you hired. Also beware of Lawyers who don’t practice law where your case will be heard – they are usually referral services who charge you money to refer your case to another lawyer.
Your Attorney should be honest with you about your case - many Lawyers will make outrageous promises about the great result you're going to get if you hire them and then, once you've paid in full, the truth comes out and your case promptly falls apart.
Your Attorney should answer your phone calls and meet with you in person as necessary as your case proceeds - in most cases you will have questions and your Attorney should be available to answer them.
Your Lawyer should be able to fight your case in a Jury Trial if necessary - Lawyers who can't or won't do trials usually do not get the same results as lawyers who will fight for you.
